PPC
There are a large number of very clever and talented PPC (Pay Per Click) affiliates that can work with you to drive more traffic. This can be done in a number of ways – for example, you could allow a small number of affiliates to brand bid – so they can bid on your brand topics and keywords. While to some this may seem counterintuitive, if you are not brand bidding yourself, then having some kind of control over who does can drive you substantial extra sales. But it must be said this is not for everyone.

Content
A number of affiliates are content driven specialists, so they could be information based or niche portals, news sites and the like. These sites work tend to work best with SEO as a key traffic driver. They could already have a number of large traffic rankings that you can piggyback off by working with them on your affiliate programme. So while you work on your own SEO rankings you can take advantage of traffic from those terms by working with an affiliate who has them!

Voucher Codes
Today, most people look for a bargain and one of the major terms keyed into a search engine during a buying process are one of the words “discount” or “coupon” or “voucher”. Try it in Google yourself, you will see if you type in your brand name, Google will automatically add one of these words in their autosuggest feature as they are popular keyed in terms. Voucher code sites such as MyVoucherCodes or DiscountVouchers are very popular with consumers.

If you are not using vouchers or coupons, now could be a good time to try. There are a large number of these types of affiliates but you could opt to try this with one of the larger programmes out there.

Comparison Sites
There are a number of comparison scripts available now to affiliates so they can build comparison services that allow visitors to compare product prices across a number of different supplies. This works very well with affiliate programmes that offer product feeds. You only have to look at finance sites such as Moneysupermarket, Confused and GoCompare to see the huge appeal to consumers for comparison services. But outside of finance there are a large number of sites offering comparison tools. There might be one for your products. One way to take advantage of this facility is to offer a product feed for your products and make sure it is kept up to date.

Cashback / Reward Sites
As well as discount there are a number of cashback / reward sites where for shopping via them, you earn either direct cashback from them (they pay away part of their commissions you give them) or they get reward points to use on their sites. Sites such as TopCashBack or Quidco are good examples. These can be a great way to drive sales, but for certain types of products (Insurance and Finance products) you have to keep a tight control on cancellations and returns as some people sadly do try and cheat the system by getting a cashback and then asking for a refund. This is not the site owners fault but simply human nature.

That said, cashback sites are a great way to drive large amounts of eager buyers to your door.

Blogs
Earning money from blogging is a growing trend. Niche bloggers can work really well with your programme as they will have large sites and a good following which can buy product if the blogger recommends you. They will also get traffic from SEO so could be another great way to drive sales

App Affiliates (Mobile / Social)
With the advent of social media, there are a number of application developers that build useful tools for Facebook users that can have built in affiliate deals. Again, if this is in your niche, this could be great way to drive extra sales.

The same can be said for mobile affiliates – there are a number of apps you can use on your smartphone that could have deals or adverts built in.

By understanding that there are a number of different affiliates types, you can see there may be a lot more you could be doing in order to drive sales from your affiliate programme.

So, what sort of things might you be looking to ask them in order to provide yourself with a degree of comfort that they know what they are talking about?

Multiple platforms and delivery

One of the big themes over recent years is the idea of platform convergence in terms of delivering your propositions to the public.

That may sound a little like technical jargon but essentially it just means making sure that whether someone is on a PC, smart phone, tablet or laptop computer, if they can access some sort of network, then they will be able to access your site.

In order to be able to make sure that is the case, you provider will need to understand elements of hardware, software and communications protocols.

Being realistic, you might find it hard to interrogate them far on any of these subjects unless you understand the technology herself.  However, a good question is simply to ask them for samples of applications they have delivered which are accessible through all these various media.

Make sure you get to see it rather than just reassurances that they have done it in the past.

Identify their strength in depth

You won’t want to experience delays and cost overruns because you receive a phone call one morning from your provider telling you that their designer or programmer has just left them but not to worry as they’re trying to recruit another.

Make sure that you are dealing with more than a one man band.

Speak to reference sites

Ask to speak to at least a couple of customers they have completed a satisfactory development for in the past.

If they are uneasy about providing reference sites, it might be cause for concern.

Check their philosophy on post-sales support and maintenance

If you need to change your website, you might accept that you will need to pay for that and to schedule it accordingly.

However, if you discover problems and inadequacies in your site once it has gone live, what will your provider be able to do to support you?

Remember, promises are easily made and sometimes equally easily broken.

Make sure that they are willing to offer you guarantees in terms of their speed of response in such a situation and make sure it is included in a contractual commitment.

Check what they know about your business sector

The presentation psychology used in a website aimed at selling, for example, motor vehicles, might be significantly different to that required to make a success of a financial services website.

Although the basic design methodology and approach may be identical for both, the application of certain techniques and cultural approaches might be very different and would rely on your provider having at least some experience of your industry sector.
